Non- mercury thermometers, such as our spirit thermometers, use pigmented mineral spirits which have proven to be just as accurate as mercury thermometers. Mineral spirits include a variety of compounds, and are derived from light distillate fractions from the crude oil refining process. Spirit gauge thermometers rely on the principle that liquids expand when they are heated and contract when they are cooled. This type of thermometer consists of a reservoir for the liquid, the bulb, connected to a very narrow tube. The narrow tube accentuates the very small changes in the liquid\'s volume that occur when the temperature of the liquid changes. These thermometers are accurate to within +1/-1 degree.

The Vermont Estate Thermometer, T-18, is the largest window thermometer on the market, bar none. This thermometer stretches over 38" from tip to tip with gigantic 1 1/8" numbers and with its spirit gauge accuracy, there'll be no guessing about the temperature. The solid brass components have been antiqued to a warm patina. An optical quality acrylic tube assures clarity and rigidity, while keeping the weight down to facilitate mounting. Non- mercury thermometers, such our column thermometers, use pigmented mineral spirits and have proven to be just as accurate as mercury thermometers (+/- 1˚F in the middle of the range). Thomas Jefferson was an avid gardener, a follower of meteorological trends and a contributor to scientific understanding. He surrounded himself with devices designed to enlighten his understanding of the natural world - some of which he designed himself. Had Thomas Jefferson designed weather instruments, they would have been attractive, long-lasting tools designed to reflect a gardener's reverence for the sun, the wind and the rain.

The Jeffersonian Thermometer, uses a unique pierced brass drum gauge, with separate Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature scales to allow readings from either side. A large isolated bimetallic coil allows an accurate reading even in full sunlight. Large pierced numbers with relief in contrasting stainless steel together with stainless steel pointers make it easy to read. Each thermometer includes two 14 inch brass rods plus a pressure treated wooden stake for a total height of 46 inches, as well as a hanger bolt for optional installation on a post fence or deck rail. Total height with hanger bolt installation is 18 inches. Like all Conant garden products, the Jeffersonian features solid brass construction and a natural finish.
