Leeks have a delicate flavor much like a sweet, mild onion and are highly prized for gourmet cooking. The tender, white stems, that can be as long as 10", are used to flavor soups, stews and require several months from seed to harvest.
Seed Planting Information:
- Planting Depth: 1/4"
- Seed Spacing: 1"
- Spacing Between Rows: 12-18"
- Space After Thinning: 4"
- Days to Germination: 10-20
- Days to Maturity: 90
When and Where to Plant:
Start seeds indoors or in hot bed 8 weeks before last frost. For later crop, sow directly outdoors in a warm and sunny location as soon as the ground can be worked. In frost free regions, sow again in late summer. Cultivate soil and enrich with vegetable food. Firm soil over seed.
Care, Harvesting and Storage:
Push soil around stems when 3-4" tall. Feed monthly. May be pulled and enjoyed before maturity. Store extra seeds in a cool dry place. Heat and moisture severely reduce germination.
